Oil and propane tank chart

1200 litre oil tank chart

Most home heating oil tanks in the UK and Ireland are plastic and bunded: an inner tank that holds the oil, inside an outer one that catches a leak. Around 1,200 litres (about 317 US gallons) is a common size. The tables below turn a depth into an approximate number of litres for two of them.

Why these numbers are rough

The published sizes are for the outside of the outer tank. A box of those measurements holds far more than the label says, because the bund, the gap between the two tanks and the ribbed walls take up room. So each table treats the tank as a box, then scales every row so that full equals the capacity on the label.

That makes the percentage the useful part. If the oil is at 40% of the height, about 40% of the tank is left, give or take the shape of the ribs. The litres column is that share of the label capacity.

Titan EcoSafe ESLP1200 (low profile)

Outside 1,800 × 1,200 × 1,005 mm, 1,200 L on the label. As a plain box of that size it would hold 2,171 L, so each row is scaled to 55%. Half the height reads 600 L.

Measuring the depth

What counts is the oil in the inner tank, and its floor sits above the ground. Many bunded tanks have a gauge that shows the level directly. If yours shows a percentage or a fraction, it lines up with the "Full" column.

The heights here are outside heights, so a stick in the inner tank may never reach the top rows. Use the percentage as the guide.

Other sizes

The calculator also has the Titan ESV1300 (round) and ES2500, and takes any size you measure. Sizes and capacities are from the Kingspan Titan EcoSafe product selector (03/2026). To estimate when the oil runs out, see how long heating oil lasts; the math is the same in litres.
